This was a great article that talked about the importance of modeling reading. It talked about the major benefits that shared reading has on both the students and the teachers. There are many different types of ways to read to your classroom. There is echo reading, which is when the teacher reads a short sentence or passage and the student repeats the same thing. There is choral reading, when students read aloud together as a class or group. There are so many ways to make reading more interesting and fun to your classroom. The article talks about how it has been proven that shared reading positively affects student achievement, I strongly believe in this. It also is there to improve a child’s phonemic awareness. The article goes into great detail about the four components of shared reading: comprehension, vocabulary, text structures and text features. I now have a greater understanding of each level. As I was reading the National Geographic website about Blackbeard I was able to make many connections to this article. I found myself thinking of many ways to make this reading fun. The website gives great detailed readings, and is very informative. I know I could introduce many new vocabulary words and easily use all four components of shared reading when reading from this website. Overall, this article was very interesting and taught me a lot more about the importance of shared reading.

Katie,
Good overall response to the article. Can you give me a specific example of how you might model a think aloud and teach ONE of the following components: vocabulary, comprehension, text structures or text features…
